In-Focus with Carla Stringer

June 12, 2019

The people and the stories behind Focus Solutions.  Here’s our Executive Support Assistant, Carla.

How long have you worked for Focus?

Started in May 2014 as a temp, was taken on permanently in August 2014.

What did you do before Focus?

I worked for a Computer Games developer where I stayed for 13 years. My role was within HR and Recruitment. After finishing college I went into hotels and conferencing became quite bored and wanted more of a challenge so I accepted a job working for a home building company and boy was I challenged! I oversaw the upkeep and maintenance for many new build sites throughout the West Midlands. Most stressful thing I’ve ever done! People moving into half a million pound plus houses calling me up to complain what builders, plumbers and electricians hadn’t done and when were they coming to fix their problems.

What made you follow this particular career path?

I’ve never really known what ‘I’ve wanted to be when I grow up’ and still don’t. I just fell into admin then opportunities came up to move into the human resource side of things in particular recruitment which I’ve always enjoyed because of the interaction with candidates, agencies, universities and colleges. As a lot of people do you get a mortgage, then have children so career and experimenting what I’d like to do was put on hold due to financial constraints and being a mum.

What does your day-to-day job entail?

I cover reception duties on a Monday morning and for the rest of the week Recruitment and HR administration. Certain times of the month my time is spent on payroll inputting, pension processing. Raise Purchase Orders, deal with requisitions and receipting related to company benefits, payroll services, SME’s, permanent and contractor hire. I generate company stats related to HR on a regular basis for Standard Life. Due to the nature of my job I liaise quite a bit with the people and finance central service team at SL. Adhoc duties including helping out other colleagues and rolling out the mandatory training. I also give PA support to Martin McHugh when needed.

Favourite thing about working for Focus?

Flexibility and understanding. Day to day variety, every day can be different.

Outside of work, how do you relax and like to spend your free time?

I don’t get much free time to myself out of work but when I do the gym is where I can go to de-stress. I also run when I can. Then just the usual spending quality time with my daughter, friends, family. I do enjoy a bit of bingo (2 little ducks, legs 11 and all that) too. Love to visit new places as well.

Interesting fact about you?

I’m a qualified beauty therapist and masseuse. Never broken a bone in my body or have any fillings.

You’re stranded on a desert island; what three things would you want with you?

My daughter, music, pair of tweezers
