As a teen, visiting friends and relatives on the continent, it struck me how chilled out people were in mainland Europe, where owner occupied home ownership amongst the masses was the exception rather than the rule. Whereas in the UK, it seemed to me that most families had their own home, and therefore had a monthly mortgage commitment to find, our European cousins generally didn’t aspire to home ownership.
